Our Collaboration with Orbis

As part of our commitment to global eye care, we are proud to support Orbis in its mission to eliminate avoidable blindness. Through our partnership, we have contributed to Orbis’s Cybersight platform — an free award-winning telemedicine initiative that delivers essential training and resources to eye care professionals worldwide.

This collaboration reflects our goal of improving access to knowledge, tools, and expertise for clinicians, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where advanced training opportunities are often limited.

For more than four decades, Orbis has transformed lives through the prevention and treatment of avoidable blindness. With a global network of partners across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean, the organization works to make quality eye care accessible to everyone.

Thanks to our multi-year support, Orbis continues to expand impactful training programs across communities and continents. Upcoming webinars and initiatives aim to empower even more ophthalmic professionals, helping to raise the standard of eye care in their local communities around the world.

Training Eye Care Professionals Across the Globe

Cybersight is a pioneering e-learning platform that enhances the knowledge, skills, and expertise of eye health professionals worldwide.

Through live global webinars and telemedicine consultations, it provides critical support to clinicians who may lack the resources available in higher-income settings. These opportunities are particularly vital for professionals working in regions affected by conflict, economic hardship, or limited infrastructure, ensuring they can access the training needed to deliver high-quality care to their patients.

Heidelberg Engineering supports Orbis UK in advancing eye health services in underserved regions through its award-winning telemedicine platform, Cybersight. Since the partnership began in 2024, we have funded essential webinars that provide top-tier education and training to eye care professionals across the globe.

With an estimated 90% of the 1.1 billion people living with vision loss or blindness residing in low- and middle-income countries, Cybersight helps bridge this gap by offering free virtual access to training, expertise, and vital resources—regardless of location. Webinars supported by Heidelberg Engineering and Orbis reach professionals worldwide, including those in conflict-affected regions such as Afghanistan, Somalia, and Ukraine.

Supporting Retinoblastoma Research and Patient Care

In addition to supporting education, Heidelberg Engineering actively contributes to Orbis’s research initiatives, with a particular focus on retinoblastoma, a rare but serious childhood eye cancer.

By leveraging telemedicine and innovative diagnostic tools, we help improve surgical outcomes and enhance survival rates for affected patients. Combining advanced imaging technologies with Orbis’s telemedicine expertise allows us to deliver critical medical interventions to children in need, ensuring they receive the highest quality care, regardless of where they live.

The Lusaka Eye Hospital in Zambia

As part of a newly announced clinical project at Lusaka Eye Hospital in Zambia, Heidelberg Engineering will deploy its advanced multi-disciplinary imaging platform –  ANTERION®, optimized for the anterior segment – to support patient pre-operative imaging and to generate robust, data-driven evidence for the integration of optical biometry into routine cataract surgery protocols, with the goal of testing the hypothesis that the use of ANTERION® can improve cataract surgical outcomes in low-resource settings.

This initiative marks an important milestone in the ongoing collaboration between Orbis and Heidelberg Engineering to promote equitable and democratized access to advanced eye care. By leveraging Heidelberg’s high-resolution imaging technologies, the program aims to document real-world improvements in surgical outcomes through precise preoperative measurements and clinical imaging.

In addition, the project will gather data from traditionally underserved communities to help address algorithmic bias in AI systems, supporting the development of more inclusive digital health tools. Together, Orbis and Heidelberg Engineering are committed to fostering innovation that benefits all patients, ensuring clinicians worldwide have access to the technology needed to deliver the highest standard of care.
