Unlocking deeper insights into choroidal health with AI-powered analysis

Heidelberg, Germany (1st October 2025) – Heidelberg Engineering today announced a new collaboration with NetraMind Innovations, Inc., an AI-driven image analysis software company founded by leading retinal specialists and machine learning engineers. Their new application, NMI-ChoroidAI*, is now available via the Heidelberg AppWay marketplace, empowering eye care professionals and researchers with automated, quantitative insights into choroidal health from routine OCT scans.

NMI-ChoroidAI leverages advanced machine learning to intelligently process SPECTRALIS® OCT volume data, automatically segmenting the inner and outer choroidal boundaries and analyzing choroidal vasculature. This enables precise 3D segmentation and provides comprehensive measurements of choroidal thickness, volume, and the Choroidal Vascularity Index (CVI). Results are delivered in ETDRS grid format and detailed tabulated reports, designed for seamless integration into both clinical workflows and research protocols.

“Accurate assessment of the choroid is essential in understanding and managing retinal diseases such as AMD,CSCR, and pathological myopia. Manual segmentation is often time-consuming and subjective. With NMI-ChoroidAI, clinicians and researchers gain objective, reproducible, and fully automated analyses in a fraction of the time, enhancing both patient care and scientific discovery,” said Dr. Jay Chhablani, Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh and Director of the Choroidal Analysis and Research Lab at UPMC Eye Center.

Developed by NetraMind Innovations, whose team collectively brings over 50 years of expertise in ophthalmic imaging and computational image analysis, NMI-ChoroidAI addresses critical challenges in choroid analysis. By providing AI-accelerated segmentation with clinician oversight, intuitive visualization tools, CVI heat mapping, and streamlined workflow compatibility with HEYEX 2, the solution transforms a previously tedious process into rapid, clinically valuable insight.

“At NetraMind Innovations, our mission is to push the boundaries of innovation in healthcare through advanced analytics. With NMI-ChoroidAI on the Heidelberg AppWay platform, ophthalmologists and researchers can now unlock deeper insights into the choroid, helping to improve diagnostic confidence, streamline workflow, and accelerate research into ocular diseases,” commented Dr. Chhablani.

This collaboration expands Heidelberg AppWay with another specialized AI-powered solution, reflecting Heidelberg Engineering’s ongoing commitment to providing clinicians and researchers with tools that enhance diagnostic precision and improve patient outcomes.

“We are excited to welcome NMI-ChoroidAI from NetraMind Innovations to the Heidelberg AppWay marketplace. This partnership reflects our vision of combining innovative AI applications with the trusted imaging and workflow solutions of SPECTRALIS and HEYEX 2, delivering powerful insights that make a meaningful difference in clinical practice and research,” said Rowan Emslie, Product Manager Clinical Workflow at Heidelberg Engineering.

See NMI-ChoroidAI in Action at AAO 2025

Attendees of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Annual Meeting in Orlando (November 18–20, 2025) will have the opportunity to experience a live demonstration of NMI-ChoroidAI at the Heidelberg Engineering booth #3149. Experts from Heidelberg Engineering and NetraMind Innovations will be available to showcase the application’s capabilities and answer questions from clinicians and researchers.
