Diabetes is linked to an increased risk of glaucoma

A recent article by scientists from Johns Hopkins University, Diabetes, Fasting Glucose, and the Risk of Glaucoma, reported on a meta-analysis of 47 studies including 2,981,342 individuals to "summarize the association between diabetes, diabetes duration, metabolic syndrome, and glucose levels with the risk of glaucoma and with IOP [intraocular pressure] levels in the general population."

Their findings suggest that "diabetes, diabetes duration, and fasting glucose levels were associated with a significantly increased risk of POAG [primary open-angle glaucoma] and that diabetes and fasting glucose levels were associated with increased levels of IOP." This article reminds clinicians of the high comorbidity of glaucoma and diabetes and reiterates the importance of glaucoma screening in patients with diabetes.
