Highlighting Nerve Fiber Layer

By using a blue wavelength of light to illuminate the retina, the confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope can create images which highlight specific structures best seen in “red-free” images.

The retinal nerve fiber layer, internal limiting membrane, retinal folds, cysts and epiretinal membranes are structures which are often easier to see under blue light illumination.
